I've been trying to copy big files (2.3gig) from an XP computer to a w2k computer and viceversa. and it always cuts off with the message "Cannot copy the file. The specified network name is no loner available".
I can still see the drive after the message and it has like two red strings coming out of the bottom and they dissapear when I click properties. can anyone think of a possible reason?

You have an intermittent network problem. I have had similar problems with a particular machine having to renew its IP address every few minutes. Wireless networks seem to have similar problems. Even if the network disconnects for only a few milliseconds, that is normally enough to cause the write to fail.

i find it best if you use a crossover cable and do the transfer. Make sure you static ip both PC.

Are you surfing the Internet from either machine while the Transfer is in progress? Your Internet and Intranet might be struggling with available bandwidth?

thanks for your answer. I'm not surfing but this rings a bell if the whole campus is using up the bandwith thus makng the dhcp act up on all computers
