Networking windows 2000 and XP

I'm attempting to connect a PC running windows 2000 with another running XP. I'm using ethernet cards connected with a length of crossover cable. I'm using the following configuration:

Windows 2000 PC
IP Address: 10.1.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: None
lmhosts.sam:10.1.1.2 NameofXPbox

Windows XP PC
IP Address: 10.1.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.1.1.1
lmhosts.sam:10.1.1.1 Nameofwin2kbox

I have the client service and TCP/IP protocols installed. The PCs can see eath other but I cannot access files on either, even though they are both logged into accounts with identical usernames and passwords.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yep, the print and file sharing is installed and resources on both computers are set to be shared. I have also enabled NetBios over TCP/IP on both.

Have you actually shared any resources - folders, drivers, printers (ie, not the default C$ etc shares, but ones you've set up)?

PS. If your users have admin access, you should be able to access the default shares too - eg, get a run prompt up and type \\Nameofwin2kbox\C$ from the XP box.

Yes, I have set up shared folders on both pcs. I can't access those either. Running the command you have suggested doesn't work either. The Win2k pc will not even display the xp pc in the My Network Places screen under workgroup (which both should be members of).

One thing - you don't need gateway defined on XP machine (unless you're also using ICS on this machine - you'd then need it as you're manually assigning IP addresses, and ICS normally sets host machine as DHCP server). I don't know if having this defined will actually upset file sharing.

Some other notes/questions. lmhosts.sam is just a sample file - need to use lmhosts for real (but you DON'T need entries in this file for networking to function).

You say you can see each machine from the other. So what happens when you double click on the other computer icon in network places?

Also, what happens if you try mapping a drive with net use command? (basically, I'm puzzled as this sort of connection usually just works. You haven't changed any other network settings? Is there an internet connection invloved?)

Sometimes I am able to see the machines from the other, sometimes not. When I click on it I'm told that I do not have permission to use that resource.

Using the net use comand i get error 67 (network name cannot be found).

My solution was to setup the user of each machine on the opposite pc. In other words if Sam was the user on w2k pc and Tim on the XP I set up an account for Sam on the XP and Tim on the w2k pc. Afterwards all was right in the world.

I've got the same user on both machines, could this be causing the problem?

I've never run into this before but I'd say YES! Try changing the user name on one of the machines (reboot to make sure everything still works) then add the other users as I outlined in my other post! Cheers

Tried using a different user. No changes. When I click on the machine in the My network places I get a folder path not found messge.

There's a firewall in XP by default, have you desactivate it?

And try \\ip address\share
ex.: \\10.1.1.1\c$
It will indicates that it's your netbios resolution who failed if it works.

The firewall function in XP was not enabled. I've tried the command \\10.1.1.1\c$. It will show the shared drive on the 2K machine when its typed into the 2K machine but it will not display files on the win2k machine when typed into the XP machine.

Oh well, I've had to get rid of XP on that machine anyway due to some unrelated hardware problems. Thanks to everyone who replied
