Hi,

I am wondering if somebody knows what configurations i need to change to network 2 win-XP pc's using ethernet crossover cable using TCP/IP.

I know my crossovercable is good. I set static IP on each of the Pc with common subnet mask. But i dont know what to do with DNS & WINS settings. I am poor in networking cocepts. Can someone help me or shows me links on web where i can get the info.

Thnking you,

You shouldn't need DNS or WINS for a 2 computer standalone network. Are you having some problems that made you ask this question? Can each machine ping itself and the other by ip address?

Assign a static IP address to each adaptor. I use 10.0.0.1 and 1.0.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for both.

No DNS or WINS enteries are needed. The system may assign 127.0.0.1 to the primary DNS box. This is the local loop back and is ok.

In advanced, disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Map A drive to the computer you want to see files on.

Example: To see files on the .2 computer.

\\10.0.0.2\C$ (or some directory)

To go from .2 to .1 just reverse the process on the .2 computer.

'In advanced, disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.' Why - what good does that do? Won't it just stop the use of network object names (so you'll only have access via tcp/ip address - NOT a good idea). Also - you should NEVER use the adminstrative hidden shares (like C$) - always create your own (generally non-hidden ones).

bbpatel001 - as Smah asked - are you having problems? is a good reference site (IMO). From what you said, all you need to do is share resources on the 2 machines (and they should be in same workgroup).

Hi,
