I have 2 laptops running windows 98 that I need to network together. Can I just hook a a network cable between them?
How would I set this up?

YOu would use a cat5 crossover cable. And probably have to implement a protocol in CP networks. And implement file&print sharing, then share a drive. Both machines on the same workgroup with different identifications.
Once everything is implemented correctly you click on network neighborhood and find the other machine. Map a network drive and put it somewhere where you can access it.

to add;
Both laptops have NICs?
I think you'll want to use the NetBEUI protocol, not tcp/ip
if you're using pcmcia cards you'll probably need a hub or a switch.
If NICs aren't involved then a DCC (Direct Cable Connection) is what you need

buena,
What both laptops have would help curb your advice.

Assuming that you have NIC's in both, then a crossover cable would work fine without the need for a hub or switch (both of which aren't bad alternatives though). Since they are both running 98, then the NetBEUI or TCP/IP protocol would work fine.
