this may sound like a stupid question to some, but I got a PC from where I work that was connected to a Novell network. How do I clean out the Netware client directories so it boots completely from the local PC's OS?

I tried erasing the novell directories from the start menu/taskbar settings, but that only made the boot stall and ask for a missing netware client file...

Is there a way to erase the directories to allow for a clean boot or do I have to reformat the HD?

Might be able to go to the control panel and then click on the "NETWORK" Icon and remove everything and see what happens. This should remove Novell Netware Client and all other associated clients and services. If any networking stuff is indicated in the network part of the control panel Windows tries to load it. I would remove everything even the dial-up adapter and TCP/IP. You can always set the laptop back up for a dial-up ISP. You can probably buy a modem card for the laptop if you want, however if you can use a modem card they run around $50.00 as apposed to a $20.00 IBMPC Modem PCI card. They also make inexpensive external modems that plug into a serial port.

If you had an ethernet or NIC card in each machine you could use some simpler microsoft networking to hook them together. You could use something like cable connect to transfer files you need. Be careful with the passwords for the laptop. Once you lock yourself out of the BIOS or the operating system it can be hard to get back in. Some laptops are bad for that.

Erasing the directories is not the way to remove software from a Windows 9.x or NT box, and will always cause issues like this.

ceh4702's suggestion, although good, may not work because the directories are not there, and possibly the uninstall files are missing.

Windows 9.x and NT put loads of stuff into the Registry, which is not removed if the directories are deleted.

You could search the registry for Novell related stuff and delete it, or you could reformat and re-install. My experience with the Novell client is such that I'd suspect you will end up doing this anyway.

yostar79 (Visitor),

Try this little trick:

First you install the Novell thing first, to make up the
directorys that you have scratched out. Then you
uninstall the Novell by ceh4702's way. It a little
cunning this way but it may work. Good Luck.
Hope you don't have to reformat you hdd for
something like this.
