I a have two PCs both PIII 500 with 128Mb RAM and need to network them.

What is my best option?

Are there any benefits in using a hub than just a crossover cable ?

If I get 10/100 cards and a 10/100 hub will the network run faster than 10Mb/sec ? Bill Paton

The easiest method is just to go down to CompUSA or someplace like that and get a networking kit. It will contain 2 NICs (10/100 network cards) and a basic 4-port hub.

1. Install the NICs, hook them to the hub

2. Configure the PCs with the same protocol (netBEUI will work fine for this).

3. Make sure you add 'Client for Microsoft Networks'

4. Under the Identification tab, make sure they are in the same workgroup.

Reboot and you should be up and running.

Dear friend,
The most common one would be to use a hub.
Check that your LAN card is detected by your computer. Then go to control panel and network.Make sure you give access to file and print sharing. On the identification give the name of the computer and the workgroup. If you have an Internet connection set the settings in the TCP/IP.Give the DNS and IP address to your computer then reboot your systems and it should be up and running.

Hub? Not needed. You only have 2 PCs and they will be less than 100 m apart, Cross cable is enough.

The benefits with a hub
1. You can adjoin 3 or more pcs or ADLS routers to the net.
2. Hubs amplify signals using its internal repeater thus 1 PC can be located 100 m from hub, the other is 100 mtrs also from 100 mtrs from hub, the distances between the PCs will be as much as doubled.

3. Set the NIC configuration fixed at 100 mbps. This will
ensure that PCw will negotiate at 100 mbps.
