I have 2 pcs, both with ethernet cards , both on the same networkgroup (workgroup) and i would like to connect them. I have bought a cable (Cat5) with two same ends and plugged it in both computers. I open network neighborthood but only the name of the computer i m on is displayed. i try to search for the other computer's name (start-->find-->computer) and still nothing. I m sure there is nothing wrong with the network cards.
cross-over cable ok . + checked boxes "file and print sharing" + firewalls down

what can i do?

Hi,

Have you assigned a fixed IP address to each machine?
Give the first one
192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and the second
192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0

and this should do the trick.

You can do this network card to network card with no hub or switch if you have a crossover cable. A straight through cable will not work. I believe that a "crossover" cable has pins 1&2 swapped with pins 3&6 at one end.

10BASE-T or 100BASE-T only use 2 of the 4 pairs (pins 1&2 and pins 3&6 are the two pairs used). Pins 1&2 are TX or transmit and pins 3&6 are RX or receive.

I hope I am not mistaking, but it sounds like you may be trying to connect the two computers with a "patch" or straight through cable and it won't work.

I'm still unsure why these network cables have always had all 4 pairs when only 2 pairs are even used........maybe it was so we had to get the special crimp tools instead of using the old POTS crimp tools....

'Direct-Cable Connection' normally cannot used with network cards, the latter which andyukcy has installed.

andyukcy makes no mention of using a "direct cable connection" he says he's using a crossover cable and 2 nic cards. Though he has not posted back, I think that assigning the IP addresses solved the problem...
