I know this is probably me be just dumb ! I want to be able to switch of all the "nice bits" in windows xp Pro.
I have set windows to classic and run for best performance, but the annoying thing I want to change most of all is when I click onI want to be able to see entire network so I can click on my various computers that are shared and then selected the drives I want to pick up.
all I get at moment is the drives I have clicked on in the past I cant seem to see "entire network"
Any ideas ?

Steve Winograd, MVP-Windows Networking, notes:

I'm sorry, but, to the best of my knowledge, it isn't possible to make workgroups or computers appear in the opening screen of My Network Places. However, Win XP gives you great flexibility to configure the way that you view network places:

1. To prevent new network shares from appearing in My Network Places, click Tools | Folder Options | View, and un-check "Automatically search for network folders and printers".

2. To remove network shares that already appear, right click them and click Delete.

3. To see the other computers in your computer's workgroup, open My Network Places and click "View workgroup computers".

4. To create a shortcut to a particular computer, drag and drop the computer to the desktop.

5. To see all of the workgroups on the network, do #3 and then press the Backspace key.

6. To create a shortcut to a particular workgroup, drag and drop the workgroup to the desktop.

7. To create a shortcut to the list of all workgroups, do #5, press the Backspace key, then drag and drop "Microsoft Windows Network" to the desktop.

You can even make your own custom version of My Network Places by creating a folder and dragging/dropping the desired network places into it.

Thanks for reply, I managed to figure out what I wanted, I had to go to tools, folder options, and click use windows classic folders. Now I dont get the tool bar down the side showing add a network place, view network connections set up home or small office network, etc. i am happy that I can now click entire network straight away and see the other pcs in the work groups.

Use Search to find your computers and just drag that computer from the search box to the "My Network Places" window. Otherwise you can drill down from "My Network Places" via "Entire Network" and "Microsoft Windows Network", your Workgroup Icon, to find a list of computers on the Workgroup. This list may not be complete until all machines in the Workgroup are switched on and have spent a few minutes discovering each other across the Network.

Some security settings can hide computers from appearing in the Workgroup, as can problems with the Computer Browser Service.

Hide Workstation from Network Browser Listing.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

New Value (DWORD) = Hidden. Value Data = 0 or 1 (1 = hide), then reboot.
