For some reason when my XP machine sits for a period of time it loses network connection. I find that I can't even ping this machine from another computer on the internet. This computer is connected directly to the internet through a hub. The funny thing is, all I have to do to restore the connection is to open up a browser window or something and as soon as that window is open I can ping it again.

Is this a setting or something in XP?

Thanks,

Chris

What is your configuration? What type of connection to Inet? Hub manufature/model?

It sounds like your connection is being dropped when there is no activity and then reconnected when needed. I have ADSL thru a Linksys router/hub that can be set-up that way. Either Connect on demand or Keep alive. Your provider may be "hanging you up" with after a period of inactivity.

If you don't have a Keep Alive setting have your email program started all the time and set it to check for new mail every few minutes to keep the connection active. The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

I have 3 computers connected to this hub (Unsure of hub model because it's an off brand but it's 10/100) and I have a cable modem connection to the inet. None of the other computers drop connection like this, only the xp machine. I can ping any other IP address on my network and they all work fine. The cable modem is patched into the hub using a crossover cable.

I've tried setting up programs that constantly access the internet and this doesn't seem to work. As long as I stay connected it doesn't kick me out, but if I attempt to disconnect and reconnect, it won't let me if I'm not fast enough.

Also, another thing is that sometimes when I boot up the machine, it brings up the box that says it can't find a connection. Then I click on try again and it brings up the internet with no problems. It's almost like it's not restoring my network connections consistantly.

I am having the same problem. I am running 3 Windows 2000 Workstations, a Windows 2000 Server and, a Windows XP Workstation. The Windows XP machine is constantly dropping connections. User can log out and log back in or use the fix connection and it will restore the network connections. The dropping of the connections is very annoying because it causes serious temporary workstoppages.

A Windows 2000 workstation was once in use at this Network Drop and it never experienced problems.

I think I have it fixed. If you goto the properties for your network connection and click on the configure button for your adapter. Under the properties for the adapter click on the Power Management tab. Uncheck the button to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Let me know if this works for you. So far it's working for me.

Check in services and see if "Network Connections" service is started and is set to automatic. The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

I cannot find the power management tab for my Network Adapter. I go to properties on Network Configuration>Properties on the Connection> Configure then I have a box with the following tabs
General>Advanced>Driver>Resources. No Power Management Tab.

On advanced only 1 item in properties.

Hi,
I have the exact same problem with a Linksys Wireless w11s4 and a dlink 650 pcmcia card on my laptop. Before upgrading to XP, I never experienced these connection drops.
I removed all power management (Except for the pcmcia card, there's no power management options available...), tried the change in services and it STILL happens.
What is it?
HELP!!!

I also had this problem with a D-Link NIC and XP. The solution was the correct driver from the manufacturer's web site. Don't assume that XP loads the correct drivers for your devices.

I have a slightly different problem. After disconnecting from a DUN session I lose my LAN connection. Any ideas on this one?
