I have a stand alone NT 4.0 Server w/IIS 4.0 and IE 6.0. I have the lastest service packs 6a. I'm using an external ip address. I have network gateway services installed. I'm using frame type 802.3. Under network neighborhood I can see somebody elses network and two workstations so I know they can see me. What do I need to remove or add to prevent them from seeing me? I know they have a Novell server "I think they have 802.2 setup for frame type" and I believe the two workstations are either XP or 2000.

Disable NetBIOS on the ethernet facing the internet. That should get rid of it. If you're thinking about running an IIS server on the internet, make sure its patched! You might also want to set up a firewall as well.

My firewall is still getting attcked with CodeRed. Be careful!

Thanks for the information.

I'm using the IIS server as an Intranet..If I have IIS installed. Can I also setup a DHCP server with this. Thanks again.

You can run DHCP and IIS at the same time. There shouldn't be a problem.
You should still patch that IIS server though, there are tons of flaws and exploits for it.

Hello,

Should I remove the NWLink NetBios protocol. I'm still seeing three 2000 workstation. I have the following services running, Computer Brower, Novell Client for Windows NT, RPC Configuration Server, Simple TcP/IP Service Workstation.

Thanks

NWLink is Netware/Novell. If you're not running this then get rid of it. On the server you should be running Client for MS networks, and DHCP, and any others you may need. You should really contact your ISP, and inform them of the issue. It may be something on their end.

If you have disabled NetBIOS on your external interface, then they shouldn't be able to see you in network neighborhood. If you ARE running Novell, then you should still disable the NWLink for NetBIOS on the external interface.
