After recently splitting our companies WAN into two seperate domains I've noticed that non-existent domains/workgroups have been displayed in Network Neighborhood. What should contain only one domain now contains the following:

1. Domain1(Correct domain)
2. "Mshome" (contains ONE of our user's PC's - we have over 500 in the company)
3. "MSoffice" (I cannot expand to see if it has any contents)
4. Domain2 (not sure what it is exactly....this name, however, is one of our two physical locations on the current network)
5. "Workgroup" (Cannot expand to see if there are any contents)

I have two questions...why would the Browse Services register non-domains/workgroups as such and second (more importantly) how can I modify the browse list to only display the one correct domain.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have any trusted domains, it will show its domains, and any domains/workgroups they know about.

If you have any old WINS entries referring to (now) non-existant domains/workgroups, they will also show up. Try and find them, then tombstone and delete these entries. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

Thanks for the response DHawthorn...

We don't have any trusted domains. Also, I blew out and recreated the entire WINS database when I split the network. Nevertheless, I will try to find an entry in WINS and tombstone it.

These could be caused by incorrectly configured Workstations or Laptops, More likely, that have been given a DHCP address from your DHCP server, or have been given a correct static IP address, and are or have been used by a correctly authenticated user. I get this a lot, particularly from my Japanese users and their laptops, also from some machines that dial into my RAS server and get authenticated. It is quite normal, but very annoying. Especially when you get ras machines coming up with 'Workgroup' or 'Dad' etc. I just track down the offending machine and get it sorted.
