network looses connection with pdc after patch install

Hi All, we are running a windows 2000 server and is set to automatically install updates. First question is how do I turn off the automatic updates download? and the second question is, ever since the downloads occurred we seem to be loosing connection with the pdc for a split second which in turn causes the uses stress as they loose the document they have been working on since 6 o'clock in the morning... has anyone ever seen this before?
