Network issues

Hi all,

I have set up networks thousands of times and i'm ironically having an unsolveable issue with my home network.

2 machines, 3com hub, linksys network cards.

Each machine has an ip address 192.168.0.1 and .0.2 respectively.

I have shared the drives i need on both machines, everything says its working just fine. Everything as far as I know is correct, yet my two machines just will not see each other.

I can't believe im having this issue, can someone please point me in a new direction?

I have changes network cards, cables, even used the home network setup wizard... etc etc etc..

Have you dropped the firewalls? XP SP2 has a built in firewall that must be disabled--controlpanel/firewall icon or network card/advanced/firewall checkbox.

Are the subnet masks the same? Can you ping either one from the other?

Try shutting down all the hardware. Bring up the hub, then the pc's.

Is each pc in the same workgroup or domain?

Are the network cables securely in place?

can you ping 127.0.0.1 on each machine?

Just a few thoughts.

Many anti virus products are including hidden firewall components that can cause this type of problem.

This site may be useful if you can't "see the wood for the trees".

Hi, You also need to make sure the workgroup, username and password are the same on both machines....

With only 2 computers I allways load up NetBEUI protocol from the XP or 2000Pro CD and all those Networking problems go away.

I cannot add much to linney's comment. Just make sure Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled under Network Properties, Advanced, WINS tab.

There is no need for NETBUI.
