Hello All,
hope someone can shed some light on this problem. I have 4 Win98 and 3 Win95 machine all in a workgroup. All have shared folders that can be accessed from any of the other machines.

However, one of the 98 machines cannot see the other computers in Network Neighborhood. It keep coming up with errors stating that it cannot connect to other computers in the network. All the other machines are able to access the 98 computer's shared folders but it cannot see them. I use TCP/IP with static IP addressing and File & Printer Sharing is enabled as well as Client for Microsoft networks. I have replaced the network card b/cos i thought it was a network card issue. This did not help.

Has anyone run into similar issues? Any ideas will be appreciated!!!
thanks!!

I'm sure you have, but I have to ask... check your network cables from the NIC to the hub/router. If CAT5, check that the RJ-45 jack is firmly seated and that the cable is straight-thru (not cross-over type). Also, make sure the cable doesn't pass next to, or rest on, any power devices like monitors, TV's, flourescent lites, etc.

If coax, check for kinks and breaks in the sheathing. A few years ago I had a situation where the sheathing was cracking but the outer insulation remained intact. Drove me crazy trying to track that one! Also, check that the core wire hasn't broken off or is so short that it makes intermittent connections. There's always a better way...

Hold on just a sec!!

It definitely doesn't sound like an interference problem, although I have to admit that tviman's suggestions are useful guidelines to follow. If it was a physical connection problem, then it would have the same problem sharing as well as connecting. spideyfan specifically stated that other pc's can connect to its shares.

It sounds more like a TCP/IP setting somewhere or a missing binding/protocol. First, check to make sure your network stack, DHCP, WINS & DNS settings are all identical across the pc's on the network. Right-click net'hood and go to properties to verify which protocols are installed. Is NETBEUI used by any of the pc's?

Also, on the Win98 PC that's not working right, see if you can connect manually by going to Start -> Run and typing:

\\computername
where computername is the name of another networked pc sharing files
