A network share that is already connected as drive "U" also connects as drive "Z" from time to time. I disconnect it and then a few days later it reconnects itself as "Z".

I can't think what to look for to stop this behaviour. It's only a minor nuisance, but it would be nice to get to the bottom of it.

pushd or net use * perhaps?

Both will start at Z and work backward using the next available drive letter. Now, finding where either of those might be running from is another matter, but any batch files that you've run manually or as part of startup would be a good place to look.

Does setting this Policy help?

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\ Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon

Mapped network drive shows no drive letter or will not allow you to create new long-named files or folders

Are there Removable Drives and USB Drives being plugged in and removed?

I searched the drives for all .bat .vbs and similar that contained "net use" - nothing. As I expected.
No logon script is in use so I don't think your suggestion applies linney. Also, it is not consistent. Trouble is I don't notice the extra drive immediately, so I can't associate with anything I may have done.
USB devices are in & out all the time. From sticks, to readers, to USB drives. Since you asked linney I have made a point of keeping an eye on it and all day - several card readers in and out and a USB drive - no issues.
