Network discovery - how to turn on permanently?

Has anyone found out how to make network discovery stay turned on? Or am I getting unusual response, in that it turns itself off after a while (don't know how long) and certainly if I restart machine. Am still trying to set up the machine I mentioned in thread1583-1325694. Have started again, and Nero is working this time. But need frequent access to my LAN - and its just annoying that its not just available as it would be on any previous version of windows. I also don't normally use explorer or Network icon - file manager called Salamander instead, so when that can't connect have to open the network icon and then turn it on (again).

ControlPanel--> Network and Sharing Center, click the Network Discovery button, choose "Turn on network discovery," and click Apply.

Cheers
Rob

Rob - that's what I've been doing - it doesn't stay turned on on my machine (which I'm beginning to think is jinxed!). I'll install a copy on test machine and see if it 'sticks' on there.

If you load Vista in "Safe Mode with Networking" then perhaps Network Discovery may remain "on" and give you a direction to troubleshoot in?

You can look in the Event Viewer too, on the other hand you may prefer not to (humor), it is a bit different from XP's, and any errors found in there may take some understanding and deciphering.

Like I indicated in that other post, a lot of the third party software has not come to grips with Vista yet, and the less of it you run, the better Vista behaves. That, however. is just my own opinion.

Have discovered the 'cause' - I installed vmware 5.5.3, which does run ok, but it creates 2 'vmware' network connections. Its these that are causing network discovery to turn off (if I disable them, it stays on, but then of course networking doesn't work on vmware!). Have just found vmware beta 6, which is supposed to be Vista compatible, and am downloading it now to try.

linney - I know what you mean about event viewer - a touch over-sophisticated for my tastes. It does seem I'm going to have to hang fire on making Vista my primary o/s for a while, as the alternative to vmware is multi-booting (or virtual PC - but doubt that 2004 version will run on vista, and I do prefer vmware slightly) - which I've been a great advocate of in the past (had machines multi-booting 6 or more o/s), but its not as convenient for quick 'check how 2k or 98 does that' when supporting customer with older machine - and while I get these fairly often - there's still a lot of 98 installation here in the UK, they're obviously decreasing in frequency.

I am running Virtual PC 2004 on XP, and the nearly completed Virtual PC 2007 Beta (which is surprisingly stable, and has caused no problems this end) on Vista Ultimate RTM. I have 95 - XP covered by Virtual PC's, I have but don't anymore run Vista as a Virtual Machine from XP. At least Virtual PC is freeware now. I also have Vista as a Dual boot with XP.

I hope vmware beta 6 solves your dilemma or is that dllmania?

Incidentally if you ever get a 95,98, ME etc. machine to talk to Vista over a small LAN you can tell me how you did it. So far I have only got XP, Home or Pro, plus Vista of course, talking to another Vista machine, ironically Vista has no problems talking to the 9x machines, but it is only one-way traffic. But that is another story and not of a high priority to me.

Don't you wish Bcastner was still around?

Bill was certainly a fount of knowledge - especially on network issues. Do you know why he's no longer posting (other than he appeared to be constantly working 24 hours a day!)

I've just had a play with vista/me connection over the lan, and it won't work either way for me! When trying to connect to Vista from ME (where ME is logged on with username/password existing on Vista machine), get the old prompt for a password that you'd get connecting to nt/2k/xp machine, when you weren't logged on with username/password existing on the target machine. The other way round, Vista is prompting for a username/password - sorry, just realised I had a password set on the ME share, it works fine with that turned off. But, with it turned on, Vista wants a username & password, when there's only a password - so can't get connection then.

vmware beta 6 seems to have sorted my network discovery problem - but I think I'll try out virtual PC 2007 as well. As I said, I prefer vmware 5 to virtual pc 2004, but.. and as they're both not final products yet, I'll wait until the one I like best is, before I change over to Vista (as well as making sure I have fully compatible versions of all the stuff I really need).

Bill has had a major disagreement with Forum Management the details of which I am not privy to, suffice to say he is answering questions elsewhere (Auhma or BBS) and is likely to remain away until, or if ever, some fence mending is performed.

Thanks for playing with ME, but it got a bit confusing for me with terms like "This way and That way", so for clarification purposes, was ME able to see and access files on your Vista?

No - just gets that password prompt that has no valid value, like when accessing older NT based systems when your credentials don't exist on the NT based box. Think I'll have another go when I've some time, as that could be a little bit annoying.

Well I hope you have better luck than me, I'm just looking for some confirmation that it is in fact possible before I put any more effort in to succeeding at it. When I get bored I revisit the problem but it's not a life or death matter. But with the release of Vista I expect the problem may surface in the forum in the near future.
