This laptop cannot connect to the internet. If I use an AOL dialup it works fine and can access web sites thru AOL.

But if I connect thru a DSL router and an ethernet connection it does not work. Internet settings are correct. However when I go into the network connections there are none even though there is an ethernet adapter.

Attempts to setup a new connection brings up the initial dialog box but all the buttons a greyed out and stay that way no matter how long I wait (1 hour). ctrl-alt-del says that the program is not responding.

It would seem that something is wrong with the files related to this process. Any suggestions on how to get this working? I would prefer not to reinstall the operating system if I can avoid it.

Has this worked in the past? As soon as you connect the ethernet cable, is there any popup or tray icon to indicate that the connection has been established?

Might want to peruse this site:

You might try uninstalling the network interface card (ethernet adapter) from Device Manager and then rebooting. XP will then reinstall the drivers with the New Hardware wizard.

It has never worked buth then I never tried to. The only connection previously used was the modem with AOL.

IC
I will try that.

Thanks to you both. I will post the results after I try it.

Tried removing the ethernet drive and reinstall. No joy.

Tried winsockfix. No joy

More info.

I left it on over night trying to create a network connection. This morning it had the new connection wizard but I also had another message telling me that the Network Connections Service was not running.

Went to the services page and that service was on manual. Changed to Auto and tried to start it and got this error:

"Could not start the Network Connections Service on Local Computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found."

Tried a search on Google and on the Microsoft KB. Nothing I found was helpful.

Seems I need to reinstall this module. ????

Thanks for your help.

I am confused -
1. in the Network neighborhood properties, is the ethernet card enabled?
2. Is the ethernet card bridged to anything else?
3. Does the computer see that the network cable is plugged in?
4. Does the computer get a IP address?

1. Nothing in network properties of any kind. Completely blank.

2. Since there is nothing to see, unknown

3. When I plug a cable in it does not sees it anymore. It did before I removed and reinstalled the driver. See previous post above.

4.When I attempt to run ipconfig I get an error that the netman.dll was not found and suggesting that a reinstall might help.

Seems that something was never installed on this computer or something happened to it and needs to be reinstalled. Probably includes the Network Connections Service module and the netman.dll. Suggestions on reinstallation would be appreciated.

This computer did have speware problems previously.

Yes. It is in the device manager and it shows it is working correctly.

TCPIP is loaded.

When I have the laptop plugged into the router the light on the router turns on indicating a connection at 100MB.

Ran sfc /scannow. After it finished I rebooted. No joy. Everything is still as mentioned above.

Tried all of your suggestions but nothing worked. Did a reinstall of XP and it works now.

Thanks for all your help.
