Hello

My ISP is asking me to upgrade to one of their more expensive packages because I asked about two machines accessing the one broadband connection. I am trying to resolve this without having to shell out even more!

I have a laptop which is online. I also have a PC whichm while it has the AOL software installed, is not connected to the Net.

What I would like to do is physically connect the PC to the laptop (but have no idea of the cables, etc required) and use just the one connection to AOL. Is this possible? Would the PC need the 'permission' of the laptop to log on and would only one user be online at the same time? Would we both have the same AOL password, etc?

Many thanks.

It is possible, yes. ISPs always tell you this, but, it simply isn't true.

It depends how much you want to spend and how much of a 'proper' job you want to do.

You could get an ADSL modem/router for £50 ish, connect that directly to your phone line (bin the AOL modem) and then the PC/laptop can access the internet, independently.

The cheapest method would be to simply link the two with a crossover cable, and enable internet connection sharing on your PC.

Personally, I would reccommend you get an ADSL Modem/Router

I can be more specific when you tell me what route you want to go down :)

I forgot to say that using the crossover cable, the laptop would have to be on and connected to the internet any time the PC wants to get on the internet.

This is not the case with the modem/router.

Also you have the benefit of an extra layer of security with the extra hardware.

Hello Cyberspace

Thanks for getting back to me.

Let me price a couple of the things you mention over the weekend, and I'll get back to you.

Many thanks.

The best choice would be the modem/router, can get one really cheap these days and you also need two cat 5 network cable. Under winXp you can create a network easily which will allow both the computer and laptop to go online together or seperately.
