[bigears] Our netware server beeps every minute & displays this error:

(date) (time) IPXRTR-6.70-2
RIP Router Confituration detected
Node 000475900498 claims network address 00000006 should be 802A07DB

My Sys Admin is out of the office for the day. I sent an email to them first thing this morning advising of the infernal beeping.

I have no idea what causes this to happen and no idea of how to fix it. It doesn't happen every day - just once in a great while. [ponder]

I'm the help desk, I know little to nothing about the administrative side of Novell and/or router "stuff." My experience with servers is limited to rebooting duties. [noevil]

If someone could help me stop this infernal beeping I would appreciate it very much.

Novell Netware 6 is networking OS
Cisco Router 1700 series.

The IPX address in your INETCFG needs to be changes to reflect what the server is tell you. So you need to change the IPX address on yoru server to the 802A07DB and the beeping will stop.

GOTO INETCFG and bring up the IPX protocol and you can modify it there. Heck, if I recall, when you bring up INETCFG, I think it will prompt you if you would like this changed, and can do so without manually entering it.

DrMarkGreen is right but I think you shouldn't go changing the server's IPX network address, but rather the node's IPX network address. You need to look up node 000475900498, do a search on your network by MAC address and it will point out the offender. This node says its IPX network address should be 802A07DB instead of 00000006. The 00000006 sounds like the network address assigned to the server by the admin and 802A07DB sounds like a randomly generated one. I would get this problem when Jetdirect print server would loose their configuration and when they came back online, it would clash with the server. I would get in touch with your admin before you start making changes to the network number.

Well, if it were my network, I would have to break your fingers for fiddling with it with out knowing what you are doing.

Your best bet is to leave it up to your sys admin. More than likely he already knows about it. It is normaly a printer, but this sounds like it is an NT/2K box with he IPX address set (no real need to, IPX is a self program protocol). People some times do this for testing.

If you would like to just shut the server up so you don't have to listen to the beep, use this command at the console prompt set sound bell for alerts = off That will dummy up the server, but will not stop the console screen messages.

Clarification on my part:
My sys admin is only in the office 2 days a week.

When there are problems I email or call (depending on the severity of the issue of course...) and receive my instruction(s) on how to handle whatever it is that is going on at the time.

I would prefer to locate the offending node...how do I do a search for mac addresses on the network?

it's more than likely a jet direct - so if you have jet admin on pc - look through that.

if it's a pc i would either use zen (if you have it) or dsreport

but depends what kind of management software you have

I would agree with terry712 this is likely to be a network printer Axis, Jet direct etc. All you need to do is go round a reset each device by powering off then back on after ten seconds. Once you get to the one which is causing the problem the beeping will stop.

Every manufacture has an assigned MAC address prefix. Here is a list that will point you to the devices manufacture type. This can help you narrow it down.

This tool canhelp you get a host name from the MAC address
