I have a server running Netware 4.2 SBS (Small Business). I wish to add a second server - a Dell 400SC.
Do I need to purchase a Server +5 license for the second server? Do I need to have separate user licences for each server?

If I buy a Netware 6.5 Server +5 licence, can the existing 40 users on the 4.2 system use the new server transparently as if it is a Netware 4.2 server?

You will need a separate server / user license for the other NetWare 4.2 server.

You can not use a 6.5 license to access a 4.2 server. However, if you buy NW6.5 licenses, you only buy the amount you need for all the users in your tree. You don't need separate server licenses for each server.

Many thanks for the reply, and I am very much inclined to upgrade to 6.5SBS.

Our existing Netware 4.2SBS server has a 100MB MSDos partition. If we upgrade to 6.5SBS, and wish to add a new server, how should we proceed?

Should we install 6.5 on the new server, connect it to the existing network and use the migration tool?

Do we need to delete Netware 4.2SBS from existing server by repartitioning with FDISK to give 500MB for DOS,(250basic +256 for installed Ram ) or can this repartitioning be done on the fly with some utility, allowing 4.2 to be upgraded in situ?

If you are going to put new hardware in --AND-- you are getting rid of your old server --AND-- you want all your files/users/permissions to be moved to the new system... the best way would be to use the Novell Migration Utility.

I would recommend reading the Netware 6.5 documentation about migrating servers, and then post any new questions you may have.

yep mig wizard is best for this - not the one from the cd though - need to download newest one 7.1

used this frequently - mainly with 100% success - only had a couple of probs and they are easy to fix - never done it on sbs but assume it's the same
