I'm trying to install NW 4.11, but continue to get this same error msg: RTSSRV.LAN did not load. Control will be switched to the system console screen
where you may see the error(INSTALL-4.1-248)

Has anyone got any ideas what this error code means and how I get round it....I am using a Realtek NIC and have tried installing the appropriate Novell drivers from the Realtek website....I really have no idea what to do to progress!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.......

Assuming you have the correct driver....

when it won't load in the Install, you probably don't have the right parameters for it to load correctly. Switch to the command prompt (CTRL-ESC) and see what the error message is. Go from there.

Also, you could try doing a LOAD RTSSRV.LAN to see if it works manually. If not, what problems do you run into? do you need to specify a Slot Number? Interrupt number? Port number?

Once you do that, you should be able to take your new found knowledge and set the correct parameters in the Install screen.

Also, it's very possible that you have some new support modules that came with the driver. MSM, ETHERTSM, maybe some others. you might need to unload them from the Console (You'll be unloading the original NW4.11 versions) and load the new versions manually from floppy before trying to let the install screen load them.

Thanks for replying Marvin....

In order to try and trace the correct drivers for the NIC I removed the NIC from the box, and entered the product number into Google, it matched with Realtek as I thought it would, from there I traced the appropriate Novel Driver!!

When I switched to the system consol and typed “LOAD RTSSRV.LAN” a long list of error messages was shown. Each line read;

SERVER-4.10-1586: Loader can not find public symbol: CMSM……..

(….= where words vary i.e. one line has “CMSMFree” and the another line ““CMSMReturnRCB” and another line states something else). These error messages were finished of with the following message:

SERVER-4.10-1586: Load file referenced unidentified public variable
Module RTSSRV.LAN not loaded.

Unfortunately I’m new to Netware therefore not to sure how to specify a Slot Number, Interrupt number, Port number etc…..

Any further ideas
Thanks!!!!!!

Those PUBLIC SYMBOL errors mean that the right support modules aren't loaded. I eluded to this before, and you have just confirmed this.

Check the file you downloaded and there should be an MSM.NLM, ETHERTSM.NLM, and perhaps some others. They are newer versions than what comes originally with NetWare 4.11 and need to be loaded before your new driver can load.

Easy way to do it is copy them to floppy.. then at the console prompt in the place where you're stuck.. UNLOAD MSM and UNLOAD ETHERTSM. Do a LOAD A:MSM and a LOAD A:ETHERTSM. This will load the new versions. then you should be able to load the new realtek driver and it should work.

But check and see if any additional files are listed in the driver patch, you may need to unload the old ones and load the new ones for them too.

Nope! Still receiving the same error messages....Just tried unloading MSM.NML & ETHERTSM.NLM and then re-loading the newer files which were downloaded....I also checked for additional files but found none. Are you flummoxed yet..? I am..

Fantastic, Sorted!!! I found the NBI file needed to install the MSM.NLM and ETHERTSM.NLM....All seems well..

Again thanks for all your help!!!
