All pcs at work are running internet explorer 6.0 win 98 machines work fine but xp machines some work some dont.

Check to see how DNS is resolving the IP address internally and externally. You'll probably find that you need to change the way it's resolving from inside your private network.

The server that the clients are hitting for netstorage, how is IP configured on it? Is it behind a firewall? NAT?

the problem i am having is only internally from extarnally its fine.

I do use Nat but no firewall. All our security is done by the schools borough who manage what we can see from the outside world and also what the out sideworld can see in

Also how do I check how DNS is resolving IP addresses.

Thanks in Advance

I understand that it only works externally.

Let me try this again... When external users hit the server, they open their browser and surf to SERVER.COMPANY.COM\NETSTORAGE

When they do that, the Server name resolves to a public IP address. They hit that public address, and NAT translates it to an internal address which is the actual address of the server. Everything is fine and happy.

But when you are internal, and you browse to SERVER.COMPANY.COM, you are probably still getting the same external address, which won't work because NAT isn't going to forward it back in. You're on the wrong side for NAT to do what you want.

To verify this... Ping SERVER.COMPANY.COM and see what it resolves for the IP address. Do this once outside, and once again from inside. They will most likely be resolving to the same External public address.. But what you need is for the IP address to resolve differently for inside connections.

Ideally, to make it transparent to your end lusers, you want to be able to access the server using the same internet name. In other words, you don't want them to have to do things different when they are inside than when they are outside.

So how do you fix it? You set up a DNS record on one of your internal DNS servers for internal use that points to the actual "PRIVATE" address of the server. This will make it so when you are inside, the internal DNS server will give out the inside address.. But when you're external, the external DNS servers will still handle it.

I hope that makes sense. Depending on your DNS configuration, it may be more complicated than that. But I'm assuming you're already using DNS internally.

Hi me again

I have pingend the server using its dns name on a pc that cannot access netstorage and it returns my external address but in the same classroom i ping from a computer that can access netstorage and it returns the internal ip address so how come some pcs are getting correct info and some arent.

All pcs running same configaration as they have been done from same image.

Thanks in Advance

You need to take a look at your IP configurations and see what is different between the ones working and not working. Can't really tell you much more than that.

For working and non working... What are the IP address, subnetmasks, router addresses.... What is the DHCP server, DNS servers?

Compare and save.
