Hi, I'm trying to set up a web page with a couple of layers containing text - some roll over buttons etc - using Ultradev.

Problem is that when I view the page in IE it looks fine but in Netscape 4.7 it is a real mess. The one layer is displayed in it correct location but is mirrored underneath itself somewhat. The second layer also containing text is stuck down more or less under the first and somewhat overlaying it. The text is the wrong pitch etc. A mess.

Is there some standard methos/approach in ensuring IE and Netscape compatibility from the users viewing point of view ?

thanks in advance

Layer support for Nutscrape 4 is very sketchy. I'm afraid that if you have to support both browsers, you're probably going to need to just trash the layers method.

:-(

On the other hand, if you force NS6+, you'll have no such problems. I have found that laying pages out for IE and NS6 has gone relatively smoothly. NS is missing a few plugin support pieces for Flash integration, but other than that, everything has been just fine.

Thanks for the reply - appreciated.
Leaves me with a dilema though. What I am wanting to do is display a couple of text files (from the server side info.txt and info1.txt for example) on a page in two different locations - on top of a graphic. If I cannot use layers to do so, could you please steer me on what I should be doing to achieve this.

thanks in advance

You could size a table cell to be exactly the size of the image you want to display "under" the text, and then just stick it in as a background image, displaying the txt files in the cell as normal.

Would that get you the desired effect?

I agree with what has been written. However, I write for 4.0 and above for IE and NN and use layers almost exclusively. I do have to fudge with positioning sometimes to make them look good in both browsers (or at least decent in NN as it is dying out). Avoid any nested layers. I do use overlapping layers all the time. About the only place I find IE/NN to be a problem (4.0 and above) is with some large forms.

For extremely critical sites I write two separate sites and autodetect the browser - I find this easier (quicker) than writing with tables. Lots of folks use only tables though. JMHO
