Howdy,

I have never used netscape or it's email system. I have 2 clients that I need to back up there email files/folders/contacts. I know in Outlook it is a simple .PST and.PAB. What is all of the files I need to back up so no data is lost in regards to email and folders? I see some that are .dim, .sim, .snd and a few others.

Hints/ideas for a successful backup?

Thanks,

Bill

The files I am being told are from Version 4 from a (x system. The new system is a Win XP Pro box which I just installed Netscape 7 on.

Thanks,

Bill

To export an address book in 4.73:

1.Click the Address Book icon on the
component bar.

2.If you have more than one address book,
select the one you want.

3.From the File menu, choose Export.

4.Type a filename for the address book and
choose the file type: lidf, .csv, or tab
delimited.

5.Click Save.

The mail folder is in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\default\Mail

the drive or user profile may be different depending on where the program was installed.

Net 7 likes to import from other programs and is usually no problem.

Have I given you enough information?

Will help more if I can, let me know. Kimber

The more I learn,I realize how much more there is to know!

Kimber, Thanks for the info. That sounds easy enough. However, here is the gas that was thrown on the fire before I was asked to help... The user copied the files that she thought where her address book, email and a few others. And I am not sure which is which, I can not get into her system since she did that thing called FDISK :) and format c: SO I am just trying to make heads or tails from these files knowing nothing about netscape.

THANKS for the info.

Bill

Try looking for files with the .snm and .sbd file extensions. These would contain Netscape mail's folders, subfolders and email messages.

Once Netscape is installed on the new computer, copy all of these files into the mail folder on the new computer.

The mail folder is in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\default\Mail

I will give that a shot tonight. Thanks. What is what here? What equates to a .PST and a .PAB in Netscape?

Thanks,

Bill

From what I can tell, the .sbd and .snm files (along with the files with the same name as the .snm files but with no file extension) would be the equivalent of the .pst file.

files with the .nab and .na2 file extensions would be the equivalent of the .pab file. These are found in the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\default directory.

PS. 'default' could also be a profile name if different profiles were set up in Netscape.

Netscape stores email in the profile that a user creates after installing. The file has an .slt extension. Individual mail folders have an *.msf extension. I've found that copying the entire profile onto a CD and then copying it back into a new profile after formatting or whatever works best rather than trying to rename and recreate profiles.

A problem - how can I export Netscape 7 mail to Outlook. Address book export works alright but there isnt any way to export mail.

You can D/L and install this program:
This progy will allow you to read the files. It's a demo, and can be purchased if you choose. It will read darn near and file extension from any email program. Hope this helps.:)
