I bought one of these at an auction recently. It was going cheap and I fancied having a play with it.

If I boot it up it goes through various loops, before eventually asking me for a logon id and password.

Is there any way of resetting this so that I can get on? If anybody has any other info about this device I would also appreciate it.

Thanks

WHich model is this? A 4230? Or the original Net Ranger product? Not that it matters much. The original NR is a PII intel based PC and SCSI drive. The 4230 is a dual PII 500 but I dont recall if the old NR is a dual or not. The truth of the matter is the sensor by itself is pretty useless without the management software. All it will do is collect logs and it's very difficult to work with at a command line.

The upside is that as a Intel based PC, it's easy to whack it and turn it into a Snort sensor with ACID running on it for the front end. Or a firewall like Astrao or Smoothwall. I did this very thing for my book I wrote on Linux security. Aside from the noise from the fans and it being VERY heavy, it worked very well under Linux.

It only says "Netranger Sensor". There is no version number, so I presume it is the first version. Plus it says its a P2 400 on boot, so I doubt its the later version. It is big though!

Can I get hold of the management software anywhere? Before I wipe it I wouldn't mind a play with whatever functionality that is left. It seems a shame to kill it without letting it have a final swansong.
