netgear wireless wg111 crash

Hi! Each time I plug the usb wireless adapter (see subject for type), I get the dreaded blue screen of death and memory dump, restart, recovered from serious error. I've researched netgear's site, found an updated driver, and still the same result. This also happened with a linksys usb..."cannot install this hardware" a million times over. Any ideas? Cleaned out the registry, driver cache, all the usual.

Laptop with XP Pro / SP2 / All updated up to date
512MB DDR
P4 / 3.0
Machine runs perfect otherwise.
