Netgear FVS318 error "WAN port doesn't link"

I am connecting the FBS318 via a Cisco series 800 to BTNet 256 broadband (which gives me very good internet connectivity from a stand-alone PC) and get no response from any external IP address, or from the router's own public IP, only the above message with a ping / tracert.
Any advice much appreciated, thanks.
