What determines whether an environment would work best using BackupExec or Netbackup for backups. Is there a certain number of Servers, amount of data or anything else that determines this. I am currently using Netbackup 6.0 in a Wintel environment, backing up around 5 TB with my weekly full backups, about 80 Servers. Using backup to disk also.

I would definitely say you should stay with the Netbackup product. Backup Exec is generally for the smaller scale shops that have a limited number of servers. I used backup exec a number of years ago at a business that had one Novell file server for the entire company. I have since left that company and I now use Netbackup and have around fifty servers. Backup Exec is a good product but I do not believe it is robust enough to handle the environment you mentioned above. Not too mention the fact that I do not believe Backup Exec offers the disk to disk backups in a capacity that you would need. Obviously Backup Exec Versions have changed alot since I last used the product (I believe Version 9 is somewhat current now) Generally speaking Veritas Netbackup is an Enterprise product for backing up all of your servers under one product and across multiple platforms. Backup Exec is mostly for smaller libraries 1-30 tapes. Hopefully you will get some input from someone that is using/or has used a newer version of Backup Exec since some of what I stated may have changed. Good Luck!

The biggest differentiator are the features, then infrastructure.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.

I asked this question at a Backup Exec seminar as they were highlighting all of the features that they had integrated in to BE10 and they were stating that BE10 can also cope with enterprise environments who have TB's of data to protect.

The response I got from the Veritas guys was that BE10 was aimed at Windows environments and Netbackup was for hetregeneous.

Good point Stumpr! You can easily drop 50k on Master/Media/Client licenses a year with Netbackup as opposed to hundreds with Backup Exec. Not too mention the wonderful support contacts that could cost you tens of thousands on top of the licensing.

BE10 definitely looks like a product that could serve as an enterprise backup/recovery product. They have added some great features such as the web-based restores that users can start without admin. intervention. This could be the best thing since sliced bread for some admins or the creation of a monster for others.
