Need help in picking the best product to back up Windows NT/2k class Servers, Linux Servers, Exchange Server.

We currently run NetBackup 4.5 for HPUX 11i going to STK 9710 and L700 robots. We are looking into getting another L700 with Ultrium 2 drives.

Need to know the advantages and disadvantages for NetBackup DataCenter and Backup Exec.

We need to be able to do backups on Windows and Linux servers without the need to bring the associated box down.

The setup would be such that our Master Server would still be UNIX and media servers will be Intel Based Systems. Is anybody running this configuration, if so; How well do the servers communicate with each other.

If possible, we would like to stay with NetBackup, but if the added benefits of Backup Exec are worth the cost and it can be used with Netbackup we would explore this route.

NetBackup is an Enterprise class backup software. You can basically do anything in netbackup via command line. NetBackup gives you the ability to have volume pools, tune for performance, vault media, inline tape copies, a single policy for multiple clients, easy Robotic inventory, and a better catalog DB. The catalog db can either be a flat ASCII file or a Binary file, your choice.

Backup Exec is more of a mid-sized business backup utility. There is no performance tuning, no inline tape copies, and each client has its own backup job. Backup Exec backs up its catalog DB to the end of every backup job. The db is proprietary and can corrupt very easily.

I personally like NetBackup because it is easier to control and manage.
