.Net Framework installation failure

I have quite a few machines (xp sp1 and sp2) that are failing when trying to install .Net Framework Service Pack updates (1.1, 2.0). This is the error from the log:

Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019).

I've been searching high and low for an answer to this problem but have not managed to find a solution. I've tried everything that I can find via search engines. Would anyone know how to correct this behavior?

Do you have the Following HOT FIX installed? KB893803 v2 (Windows Installer 3.1 Version 2)? if not do so...

I would also suggest you install NetFramework 1.1 (reboot) and all Hotfixes first (reboot), then install Net Framework 2.0 and then all Hot Fixes (there seems to be some sort of file corruption that may have occured)...

Also check your Event Log for the appropriate Event ID and check it against the list at:
