Hey all,

I built a Red Hat 9.0 machine and installed Nessus on it. I tried to login to Nessus, then I was shown a certificate and asked if I wanted to use it. It had the names of a couple of my Windows 2000 servers on it so I said yes. Now when I try to login to Nessus I get an error message stating that "login failed." I've looked around on the Internet and found one answer about deleting the nessus.conf file, but I can't find such a file (since Linux is case sensitive I also tried Nessus.conf). Has anyone else figured out how to get past this login error? I'm not real Linux literate so please reply in layman's terms.

thanks in advance,

Joe Brouillette

Look under the sbin directory of where you installed Nessus. There should be two programs to help you. nessus-adduser and nessus-rmuser, I think they are self explanatory. I think the file you are referring to is nessud.conf.

Hi coffeysm,

I mistakenly thought that Nessus would have at least Root as a user. Once I added a user to Nessus everything worked.

Thanks for the response,

Joe Brouillette

That is correct, Nessus maintains its own user database. Extra form of security I imagine. Don't forget to update your plugins if you have not done so.
