Hi there,

I've been given the delightful task of restoring a users mailbox from 3 months ago.

I have looked into the recovery storage group method.
BUT
I keep reading over and over, - and i quote from this MS article 264815 ...

"You cannot restore mailbox stores that were deleted and recreated. In addition, you cannot recover mailboxes from stores if the mailboxes were deleted and purged from the system or moved to other servers or mailbox stores."

Whats all that about? Its saying that you can't restore a mailbox if it was deleted and purged - OR i presume if its gone past the retention default of 30 days...? So whats the point of an RSG then..>!?

I did try to set up a recovery storage group nonetheless, but because the server is in a 2 node cluster - i got this error -

"This server is part of a cluster. Ensure that the system attendant resource is dependent on the disk resource that containts the transaction log location and the system path location. If the path includes mount points, ensure that the system attendant resource is also dependent on the disk resource for the mounted disks."

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for your time.

If you use the Windows Backup or BackupExec and perform brick level backups then you will be able to restore the mailbox. Otherwise I belive it's gone.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

This isnt an error - it's a warning.
If the logs and database files for the RSG are on drives managed by the cluster, you are ok. Most likely they are as you are using existing drives?

Never use brick-level backups.
