We have a heterogeneous network comprised of Netware 5.1 (primary authentication) and MS Windows servers. I need to remove the Netware server, and also NDS for NT and Account Manager from the NT 4.0 PDC and BDC. We have decided to move to Windows 2003 Active Directory and the latest version of Exchange server. Does anyone know what the accepted procedure is for the removal of NDS for NT and Account Manager? All assistance is very much appreciated.

i assume that you are going to upgrade the pdc to create the forest then ?

to remove the nds for nt - is a bit tempromental - it m$
but it's seems to be ok 75% of the yime
take a bdc and take it offline

remove edir from nt server
remove account management - this backrevs it
there are lots of tids on this
do the pdc last

then just remove the netware server
then unplug your phone

good luck and you have my condolences
make sure you read - securing 2003 AD - pay attention to the exclude sysvol from virus scanning
after all who needs to scan though .vbs scripts

I was thinking it might be easier to just get a big magnet and start from scratch... They'll need new hardware anyway, Win2003 sure as hell won't run on their old Netware hardware.

It's a shame that windows isn't as easy to upgrade or secure as Netware.

thta's actually a nice point
i assume that your are getting new hardware - especially for the exchange (you need a monster) -
do you have exchange 5.5 on the nt just now or is it just the sams you are bother about keeping ?

if it's purely for the accounts and you are getting new hardware then it may be easier just to add a bdc with no account management on it - let it replicate - promote to a pdc offline and then build the forest from kere and turn your nt 4 off

if it's the edir accounts you are after - build a new forest and then ice the users and then play with the results files and then import into the new forest with ldif etc

then migrate the data - either way you are really starting from scratch with data rights etc
