I have a combo box with 892 alphanumeric entries from which the user must choose. The entries appear in the dropdown list arranged in ascending order, from 11-0003 to 99-9919. The scrollbar is proving to be a fairly clumsy way of finding the right entry for a record. Is there a way by which I can help the user by letting her/him move to the right part of the dropdown list quickly by entering a couple of the leading digits?

Thanks.

A combo box does take text entry. If the user starts typing the first few numbers of the entry desired, it'll jump to that part in the list.

So, if the user wants 15-xxxx, typing 15- will jump right to the 15's skipping everything else. It works the same with letters to.

Obviously, the user has to know what the selection starts with.

Thank you, DreamerZ. In addition to solving my problem, you have taught a novice to try something out before sending up a flare.

I'm grateful.

Hi JerSand,
As long as you don't have the comboboxes lock property set to true then you should be able to enter digits in the combobox and it will update to the closest value that is in the comboboxes row source property.

Thanks, gkprogrammer. It works great. I appreciate your help.

Better yet, create a form that has Number buttons on it like a key pad. Then when a user clicks on that number range, say 11-003 to 11-999, have a list box just present those items, then he can scroll down and click on the one he wants.

Hi, Neil.

That's a great idea. I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks much.
