My sister purchased an old IBM thinkpad - the sticker said it was a Pentium 233mhz, but after running some diagnostics on it I found it to be a 486sx 33mhz. Anyways, she's only going to use it till her work has another sale and then she can buy a newer model.

Here's the problem:

The laptop only has a 170MB hard-drive!! All she wants to use the laptop for is to surf the net. So all I need to install is Windows and a web browser. The laptop has no CD-ROM and the only installed OS is DOS.

On previous occasions I've used fast pc linker to copy the cab files over and then run the installation from the hard-drive. Unfortunately, I can't do that this time!

Is there some type of DOS utility that would let me run the installation from a desktop PC onto the laptop or is there someway to connect a desktop CD-ROM to a serial or parallel port on the laptop?

I know it's proably better to upgrade the hard-drive but I'd rather not spend the cash as she may get a newer laptop in a couple of months.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank-you.

wait a second... it sounds like you got scammed. How exactly did you buy this ancient laptop?
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
well, her company was selling their old laptops to employees. She paid $75, but other similar 486 models that had more ram and a higher clock speed were selling for $25 - $35 bucks. Someone switched the price tag off some of the newer laptops. (They were the first ones to go!)

Any ideas though?
