Anybody out there know how to control the folder view settings in the registry? I cannot get XP to remember my folder views. Every single time I open any folder the view reverts to the system defaults. In fact I also notice that the window size and placements are never remembered by the system either.

Yes, I have done all the normal folder view adjustments. Yes, I have tried playing with the window sizing by openening/changing/closing/reopening. I have tried changing the default number of views remembered in the registry. Nothing works. It's driving me mad!! [shadessad] Help!

Did you try the button that says "Apply to all folders?"

Anyway, this seems to be a hot issue, you could take a look at Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState

Remember to backup your registry before the game.

Cheers,

Dian

Diancecht,

Yes, I have applied to all folders (repeatedly).

Which hive is that in? HKCU? HKLM?

Did you remember to untick "Remember each folder's view settings" before pressing the "Apply to all folders" button? After making the changes tick the "Remember each folder's view settings" box again.

Diancecht, I have tried your registry suggestion, but no success. Any further suggestions?

BTW Bourbaki, yes I have taken those steps too.

I am trying desperately to avoid a reinstall of xp as I have some software that may not respond well to the SP2 being laid over the top. Initially this machine was a clean OS install followed by a clean SP2. If I have to re-do it there will be a mess to clean up , I am sure.

I think it is fair to say that XP has proved itself to a bit buggy when it comes to remembering folder settings, and probably you are right to think this a problem you may well have to live with until the next clean or possibly repair install.

Here are some fixes you can try.

Are you trying to set these in "Administrater" mode? Any other mode will default back to admin defaults.
