Just buried the third dead power supply for my HP pavilion 763. The last one took the video card with it. Upon installing the replacement video card, I noted that it said it needed a minimum 250 watt power supply to feed it. The computer came with a 200 watt power supply, and that's what I have been sacrificing to it on each replacement. I have seen 300 and 350 watt, and higher, power supplies on sale at various sources. Are all the connectors standard for all power supplies? I have only used HP's, so I don't know if these generic power supplies will have all the necessary connectors on the harness. Any way to find out?

As long as hp isnt using any fancy connectors that they only use most power supplys you buy will have the connectors. Almost all boards if not all boards now and days use atx power supplys. When you go to buy a power supply make sure it is at least 350 or bigger. That is what I reccomend. Another thing, be sure to check the measurements of the power supply before you order it to ensure that it will fit in the hp case. Here is a couple of sites you can use to look around and order one. I reccomend newegg however other people think differently but newegg is who I almost always order from. Great customer service and cheap.

I'm pretty sure the wiring is standard on your current PSU but at the same time I'm 90% sure that yours in a Micro ATX style unit (shorter than standard)
There are lots of online suppliers for a direct 200watt replacement but these guys do a 250 and a 300watter (the 300watt unit conforms to the latest V2.0 standard with seperate 12Volt rails and 24pin main power socket, this 24 pin connector has a 4pin detachable block so is compatible)

Just to add, because it is? a micro ATX PSU, I think 300watt is going to be the most powerful PSU available.
The extra 100watts over standard and the fact that this is a quality brand, will be plenty and hopefully prevent any future failures.

I run an Antec TruePower II 430 watter PSU. It is awesome. It has some kind of 6 pin connector that resemebles the extra mobo connector (the smaller one in addition to the main) and fits on newer vid cards (much more secure connect). My Geforce 7800 GT needed it....the power supply is about $80 bucks and will take anything u throw at it. :)

I was looking at the exact same power supply yesterday at the big box CompUSA store here. Paradise tax has been added to the price we pay ... something like 89 bucks ... I almost picked it up right away, but noticed that the bugger is six inches deep, whereas mine is only 4 inches deep. I have to recon the case first and see if I can shoehorn that thing in there. I have heard of people cutting the cases to fit larger components. I may be buying a nibbler soon.

Of course the other option would be to buy a nice new case that doesn't have the restriction of a small power supply.
Buy an Antec case and most already come pre-fitted with a quality Antec PSU.
