I have an ATI All-In-Wonder video card and the TV tuner was working fine but now has stopped. I have uninstalled the software using the ATI Tool and reinstalled it but still, NO GO ! The tuner will start to load and then stop and CPU usage will stay at 99% until I ctl-alt-del to get out of the program. I know it's a software issue because the tuner works fine with a fresh install on another hard drive.

So my question is - is there a way to find out what is causing the program not to work (debugging, diagnostics etc.) or am I going to have to wipe my drive and start over again ? Seems like there should be a way to locate whatever is causing the tuner program to stop loading ??? I've done all the virus and spyware scanning already !

I have a hunch that the "windows explorer has encountered a problem" error message I get, almost every time I shut down, is related to this cuz both problems started around the same time !

Anyone know how to troubleshoot this type of problem ?

I had a problem where my AIW card stopped working, it was just a blizzard! But when I formatted my comp, it came back.

yep, like i said earlier, i already know reformatting will solve it but that's what i'm trying to avoid. i figure there's got to be a better way than wiping the drive every time one program (or file) causes a problem ???

Do you have the same problems if you log on as another user?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

WOW!!! lots of great suggestions! haven't tried to log on as a different user but i will, as well as the rest of these tips. thanks much !!

the tuner worked when i logged on as a "Guest" !!!

so now, i've gotta find out what's preventing it from working with my normal log on ????? hmmm ??? ok, back to the other tips.

Have you tried to Restore to an earlier date? whenever i have those kind of problems thats what I do.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

If the main user profile is corrupt and you copy it to another profile, aren't you just copying the corrupt data to the new profile?

When you copy a profile some files are not copied but are created new (see 811151 as it requires manual steps), these files are the ones which more than likely have the corruption. They are the user's registry files -
Ntuser.dat
Ntuser.dat.log
Ntuser.ini

ace, i've got Restore turned off(since it's never worked for me)so i'll try creating a new User Profile and post back with the results.

Restore has been a life saver for me mant times, I love it.

Followed the instructions verbatim for creating a new profile and copying the files from the old one but when I try to copy the "old Username folder info, I get "access denied"......

p.s. and when I say verbatim, I mean verbatim!! :)

With which User are you trying to copy it with, it must be an Administrative User.

See if something like this gets you over that hurdle in case it is a Permissions problem.
