Ok guys here is the deal. I have had a desktop pc for a number of years and have it set up perfectly with xp home edition. I am the only one that uses it and therefore do not have a silly administrator or any other things such as that.

Well I have recently purchased a laptop (toshiba satellite) and have a dsl connection. I had someone come out and help me set some stuff up so that I could share files between the two computers. However...when I went to one of those documents on the laptop to edit it I was told that I could not do so as I am not the administrator and have no rights! It also said it was read-only. However, when I look at the properties it does not show it is read-only it shows it as being acrhive.

My question(s) are this. First how do I configure the laptop in the same way the pc is (I honestly can't remember how I did it and don't want to go messing with the pc) in that there is no administrator?

Second - am I doing something in the sharing process that perhaps is not allowing me to edit the documents? If so what should I or should I not being doing?

Also please keep in mind that while I am fairly experienced I am a total novice when it comes to networking and such. Any and all help will be very much appreciated!!

Some of the thoughts in this thread my help as well. This recps my thoughts on file sharing in non-domain settings with or without blank passwords:
