Here's the situation I have at a small business client:
August 14, 2001
Layout:
-------
Server is Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 2.
Client Machine 1 is Windows 95.
Client Machine 2 is Windows 98.
Client 3 is a remote access client on Windows ME.
No other machines exist on this network.
The server has 2 shares: a CD-ROM drive and a "data" directory.
The "data" directory has multiple subdirectories.
Client issue:
-------------
Login to either Client Machine 1 or Client Machine 2 as User 1, and try to access a Microsoft Word ducument in Subdirectory 1, and all is O.K.
Login to Client Machine 1 as User 2, and try to access a Microsoft Word document in Subdirectory 1, and you get the message "Runtime error on line 5".
Login to Client Machine 2 as User 2, and try to access a Microsoft Word document in Subdirectory 1, and you get the message "invalid path or filename, or check your security settings".
Scanned all machines for virus activity, and came up clean.
Server issue:
-------------
Logged in as "administrator", and checked the share/permissions ettings for the "data" directory - it is set to "everyone: full access"
Checked the secruity properties for the "data" directory - there is one entry, for "everyone". All of the "allow" checkboxes are ticked, but greyed out. "allow inheritable permissions to propogate to this object" is enabled. Clicked on "advanced", there is one entry for "everyone: full acess". Clicked on "reset permissions on all child objects and enable propogation of inheritable permissions" clicked on "apply", and clicked on "Yes" to "do you wish to continue".
Got a repeating error message indicating "an error occurred applying security information to <C:\Data\Subdirectory1\File1> Access is denied". Clicking continue simply results in a repeat of this message for all of the subdirectories and files under the "data" directory.
Question:
---------
What the heck do I need to do to allow all Users the same access permissions for this shared
directory?
