Need help removing item from startup Win95 9

When the desktop comes up, a window opens at the bottom of the screen and says its searching for "PictureViewer.exe". After a few seconds I get another messege saying that it could not find the shortcut and asks me if I want to point to it. This program is no longer installed on this PC. How do I remove this at startup on Win95? I tried disabling it through "MSCONFIG" but to my suprise, Win95 has no MSCONFIG. First time messing with this OS. Thanks for your help.

First check the Startup folder in Start>>Programs>>Startup and see if it is there. If you have multiple users check those Startup folders too.

If that doesn't work do a search for Picture*.lnk which would be a shortcut file that starts with the name Picture. If you find it, delete it.

hklm/hkcu \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

If you know someone with Win98, get them to download MSCONFIG to a floppy and load it in your System folder. You will then have MSCONFIg.

In Windows 95, you have to use the Windows Explorer to add/remove programs to the startup. In Windows Explorer, left pane, go to (C)drive, Program Files, Windows, Start Menu, Programs. Under there you will find Startup. Open that up and just right click on the program you want to delete from startup and choose Delete.

If you are networked, it could be in an installation file. Check your infs. I had a problem similar to this. I custom setup a Win98 without outlook, client later installed office 2000 (also without outlook). supposedly was fine, come to find out one day he logged on an other with Win 2000 and Office 2k. Then every time he docked and logged on, it couldn't find Outlook.

The sad part was that it was not listed in startup (as a seperate item), not listed in reg's \..\RUN, not (specifically) listed on server's user's directory, I even tried win.ini and even autoexec.bat (on an off-beat chance) to track it down...eventually I came to the local INF folder and rem'd out that line.

Four months so far without a can't find box showing up...but printers are another matter entirely .

The latest version of SPYBOT has an editing facility for STARTUP. Kill two birds with one stone, get rid of spyware/scumware and clean up your STARTUP.

It was in the startup menu. I deleted it from there.
