I have an older machine that got riddled with viruses and now I plan to wipe the hard drive and install Win98.

I do not have the original CD that came with this system and have never attempted an O/S installation before.

If someone knows of a FAQ or resource out there that I can read through to get an idea of some plan of action, I would really appreciate it. I've searched through FAQ's and posts but can't seem to find what I'm looking for (possibly not using the right keywords).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The first thing to think about is, are you planning to use a Win 98 "Full" install, or an "Upgrade" disk? If an upgrade disk, you will need a Win 95 disk to "prove" it is an upgrade. Either way, before you do anything, make an "Emergency Boot Disk" (referred to as an "EBD"). Post back with what you DO have for more info. It's really very simple: reformat with the EMB, reboot with the EMB "start with CD support", and put in the Win 98 CD. You WILL need the serial number of the Win 98 disk that you are going to use.

I am using a Win98 Full Install but I don't think I can make an Emergency Boot Disk from this machine.

It has been riddled with viruses and locks up constantly - which is why we bought a new machine. I'm not really sure what I'm going to be able to do with it. I was hoping to just erase everything and start over.

Download a boot disk from and boot with it.
That covers 99+% support of CDROMs and will be sufficient for you to fdisk, format, and load your 98.

Or make an EBD on any Win98 SE computer. Note: it has to be SE.
