Have been trying to console in and I'm not having any luck. I'm using Hyperterminal program from my laptop with 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, stop bits 1, flow control Xon/Xoff. I am connecting using a RJ45 to DB9 cable. When I bring up the terminal, nothing happens. Have tried it on 2 other switches and no luck, so must be something wrong with either my cable or my setup. Any help would be appreciated.

I generally set flow control to none . I have found that a straight thru cable with or without a db9 null modem will let you into almost any cisco equipment . I also use freeware called Tera Term for my client , i have had hyperterm problems in the past myself .

Xon/Xoff usually makes no difference; just make sure you are using a "roll-over" cable (they're flat; usually light blue) patch cord; the pins are reversed on each side (pin 1 goes to 8, pin 2 goes to 7, etc..) and you should come up fine. If that doesn't work; I'd check the COM port settings on your PC.

Here's a big FYI:
If you are connecting to a Catalyst 4000 or above (5000,5500,6500,etc.) then you can't use the same cable mentioned above; you must use a straight-through cable (like a Cat5 patch cord.)

Also, if you are having a hard time finding the roll-over cable that came with your router, go to Radio Shack or Fry's and get 8-conductor flat phone cable and a couple of RJ-45 crimp connectors..
