Hello,

I was wondering if there is some kind of statement that could be written that compacts and repairs msaccess db without needing exclusive access. We have a db with about 30 users on five computers. If four computers are logged in and one is not, the fifth can't be logged in if the db needs compact and repair unless everyone is logged off. Any ideas on how to get around this are extremely appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeremy

First: there is no way to compact a database when someone else is logged on. This is because during the process, a new temp database is created, the old one is deleted, and the new one replaces the old one. You certainly wouldn't want someone editing records while this sort of thing is going on. So, you can't.

The standard way to do achieve your goal is to have a method to boot/kick your users on command. There are FAQs written and previous threads about this sort of thing, if you're interested. Then, when everyone has been booted, you can compact/repair in exclusive mode, and then let your users back in.
