Would there be any reason a restaurant running version 4.2x would have to buy a whole new key in order to upgrade to 5.3? In other words, pay full price for the software all over again? A guy I know it saying that's what he heard he will have to do with his restaurant, but I am not sure he is understanding it right.

As long as it's a parallel or USB key, you can upgrade it without buying a new one.

I started on Aloha v4.2x and still use the same parallel key now that we are on v5.3. I pay the annual maintenance fee ($1,000 or so per year) so all our upgrades would be free. Otherwise, our reseller would charge us for every upgrade we recieved. I know that we would not have to pay the full licensing costs, but this may be what your friend is talking about.
