In the never ending quest to eliminate my storage issues, I have moved onto the suggestion that I back up my VM and then restore it.

Before I get started on this new challenge, I need help finding a compatible external tape drive.

Thanks for any recommendations.

SteveLord...the drive you are looking for is an tamberg
SLR4 drive.i know why you would want to back the system up
but why in hell would you want to restore it for?you do know the only true way to see if a backup is good is to retsore from it.if it is bad your mermail is dead in the water.

no problems only solutions

I am sorry. By restore, I think I meant to rebuild. A tape drive SHOULD have been on-hand here anyway for backup purposes.

Reason being is because I've had an ongoing issue with our storage always being full and have made several threads on it and have gone through all the recommendations here.

-New Class of Services that reduce storage for some and retain the same for others are not helping (and dont even seem to be working correctly)
-Emailing and writing memos to people to delete their crap are not helping
-Whatever calculators MM uses for storage used are inaccurate.
-Deleting mailboxes does nothing
-Manually deleting anywhere 20-40 messages gets me from 100% to 97% at best

All of this is very time consuming, especially since the terminal is slow as hell.

There's a Nortel specialist coming in Thursday to evaluate our system for a Voice/Data provider changeover. I plan on asking him about this as well.

Until then, the voicemail is full now and I intend to tell everyone that I will not take anymore action and that they need to slap the employees to their left and right and hassle them until they delete their old VM.

MerMail 10.7.2!!!!! You shouldn't be cursing this system, but bowing in front of it just for because it is still working.

Upgrade to CP and let that old dog die!

Cut me a check and will do. My superiors will not invest in upgrading unless the whole thing suddenly bursts into flames!

Our attorney missed a call from a client in relation to the CEO...so he wasn't happy about that. I sent him a long email basically saying I will no longer clean up after other employees' irresponsibility after 6 months of this. (the legal dept is good about their VM though)

So he wants to talk tomorrow and forwarded that email to the CEO. Didn't expect that! Haha.

This should be good. Would be nice if they go for splurging on a "trained technician" to get his hands dirty and maybe resolve this issue.

always the same thing. no one would try to use 286 cpu's and windows 1.0, but upgrade a voice mail.. for that mermail, a 286 would be an upgrade.. i would let the attorney know that 12 year old computers can sometimes be a little slow.. lost msgs. is a result. if you do find a trained tech, and he's any good.. his company or nortel would not support that box..

how much money do you need to lose prior to spending a few bucks on a call pilot.. i had a cust that was running that rls and had a fit because we could not support it.. i told him to try calling microsoft and get help putting windows xp on his old tandy model 20...

Well, my boss wasn't too happy initially when he found this out. And the VP didn't like how I said I was refusing to continue deleting voicemail for people. I don't intend to create chaos or seem insubordinate, but for 6 months I've sent out emails, memos and verbal advisories to people and the problem persists, whether its a flaw in MM or not deleting read messages or both.

So I've stirred the pot, but I feel it was going to happen eventually anyway. When people ask me why they get a "voicemail full" error when they have only one 20sec message, what am I suppose to do? Lie? They want to know how it basically works, so I tell em.

Time to dig up a summary of any and all solutions (with costs) and present the list of users and the major offenders.

My boss thinks I may have put myself in an unfavorable position, but I want this issue solved as much as anyone else and I'm the only one that knows squat about the system here and squat isn't even that much compared to the gurus here.

it was the same when i got here.. we had boxes with over an hour of msgs and had been stale for 2 years.. the boss here wanted me to call the user prior to deleting the mb.. i guess he still thinks i did.. one argument that may work.. devide the number of users with the total storage.. tell people that you can not create storage space..

we had 1200 uesrs, with only 4 hours, when i explained that and asked who many minutes do you want the average user the reply was 20 minutes.. guess they don't teach math in the "boss" school..

The problem I have, is that all my voicemail boxes (56) ARE used regularly. The stale boxes and messages have been removed over and over.

31 new mail and 34 old ones amongst those and its full? Get outta here....
