<b>I have a cd-rom driver install disk that works in dos. When I run set-up, it displays these messages:

&quot;could not find the file mscdex.exe in your dos subdirectory&quot;

&quot;please make sure the file mscdex.exe is located in your dos subdirectory&quot;

My OS is win95, and the file is located in c:\windows\command -- apparently not the dos subdirectory. To which directory would I copy this file???

Thanks for your help.

The easiest way is to COPY (dont move) the file to the DOS directory. The /Windows/command directory is just where windows stores this file (along with other command line files). You can COPY (dont move) the file to any directory that you want to.

Hope this helps

OK, since ANY folder in c: is considered a dos subdirectory, I planted a clone of the file in my Windows folder, rebooted and checked again. The same messages popped up.(?!?!?)

However....

The cd-rom drive seems to be spinning along just fine, so I won't worry about &quot;fixing&quot; it... :)

Mucho Thanks,

For Dos to 'automatically' find it, you need to add the subdirectory to the Path statement in autoexec.bat you may have to create autoexec.bat if it doesn't exist. Many Dos install programs expect to find mscdex.exe in a subdirectory call Dos as in c:\dos

Windows uses its own CDRom drivers, so doesn't need the Dos ones. In fact unless you run Dos programs that need CDRom support, it is best not to bother installing the Dos drivers.

You are using a DOS install disk on an Operating system that doesn't need to have the drivers loaded unless you will be booting to DOS. And if you are booting to DOS then you will need to do some hand modifications to whatever it loads.
Sounds like the Acer CD install disk. And it wants to install the stuff for DOS 5 or 6 and modify the config.sys and autoexec.bat to load the drivers.

Thank you for elaborating. I understand much better what's going on.

The driver install disk I was using, btw, is for a Toshiba CD-Rom, factory-installed in a Dell... ('Just putting everything back after reformatting!)
