am supposed to be connecting a classroon with four drops to ten computers. the current connections are so slow. i need suggesstions on what to use e.g. hubs, switches

Use switches, much better response. You can actually use any type of switch that will support VLAN's. We are using D-Link here and they work fine. Plus you can get them for a lot less than other switches.
