Just installed this DVD it will play DVD movies, it will read cds, data or audio, it will burn cds data or audio ,but if I burn either data or audio to a blank DVD+R windows says it is unable to read this format when I try to play it back. I can open it with Nero ultra and it shows my data on the disk but Windows cannot read it. I am using WinXP PRO.

Is it my media, Maxwell DVD+R 8X, I thought Maxwell was a good choice, guess not! Glad I did'nt buy but a few.

Any input appreciated

It could be the maxell, you often never know, some will work better than others. I had a NEC 1000a, which turned out to be a very good unit and used any dvd's at all and i never had any problems. And i have not heard anything negative about any NEC dvd burner yet, so its likely not the burner.
Now you may need to find, thru google, a firmware update for your dvd unit. I know that mine came with a firmware update but i also found it on the nec website, so you may find one for yours there and this firmware update may very well help with your problem. I cant guarantee it will help if there is even an update for your product, but if there is it may very well help as that is one of the purposes of these firmware updates in the first place, more compatibility with blank disks.

Another option would be to uninstall your burning software, unhook your dvd burner from your system and start all over and install both again. Again, no guarantees, and i would look for firmware first.

So you have some work cut out for you. good luck in that!

thanks garebo,
i updated firmware 1st thing after installing my dvd drive.

I expect it is media related but in a small town on saturday evening your not going to be able to purchase another brand. Tomorrow i shall go to staples and purchase some more dvd blanks hopefully one which is compatiable with NEC. i will do some research this evening.

thanks again

Sorry I made a typo should have been Maxell DVD media

When I have problems like this, I use re-writable media until it is solved.

xit,
More than likely, the problem is the method you selected when burning, not the media.

First of all, make sure you are using the plain Joliet format with ISO 9660 in Nero's Burning ROM. This is all you need for Data DVD's. The UDF format is not as compatible.

Also if you're using multiple sessions, make sure you are closing the one you are burning. Until you close the session, only the DVD-writer and Nero will be able to see the data. Once closed, any DVD-ROM should be able to read it.

I also dont think its the maxell media as i have found maxell to be pretty good. Also, i used cheap media with my nec and it worked fine.

I was pretty certain it wasnt the maxell, they're usually not a problem.
I wish you good luck
