Since installation, I notice (using task manager) that boot is a two stage process; first the OS, then several minutes later Norton. Anybody know why the delay---how to change/prevent it?
It might help to experiment with the internal settings in Norton to see what parts of it you can disable until it's actually needed.
msconfig also might be used in the experiment.
Thanks gargouille,
But I really want to know why it waits? Where is the timer? It isn't causing any problem other than being so late that Bootvis finishes before Norton starts. It isn't starting with Outlook (Express) or IE.
It might pay to leave it as it is, if you adjust any timing of Norton it may start to cause conflicts with other programs that are loading. I have come across several problems with Norton users because of conflicts at Startup.
The very 1st time I put XP on a new system, I had a problem with the bootup time...way long...and was looking for a "native" (not 3rd party) cure...and ran across someone who said they'd fixed it with a surface scan of the hard drive. Worked for me, that time, and failed on another later that had the same problem.
Won't hurt anything, just start it when you're going to bed and let it run. Ask it to mark and avoid bad sectors.
Sounds like you startup IE/OE at boot? I doubt that it's on a timer, per se, it's just the time it takes to get it all done. You might just be diagnosing the timing issues linney's talking about.
gargouille I'm not starting either at boot. Using taskmanager (which I do start at boot), I see high CPU activity for less than a minute while 20 services load. About 3 minutes later there is high activity for about 30 seconds, 6 Nortons, and msimn load and I have 27 services.
gargouille, You caught me. Honest it does the same thing without OE. It just happened that I had MANUALLY started it on the screen capture I referred to. I captured several screens before and after Norton, and that time thought it would NEVER START.
